Unsolved Mysteries: True Horror Stories from Across Indonesia Part 2.

6. Vanished Money, the Tuyul Lurks at Night

My village was once in chaos—not because of floods or landslides, but because money mysteriously disappeared from people’s homes. From loose change to hundreds of thousands, everything vanished. Whispers pointed to a tuyul (a mythical dwarf-like creature).

Two villagers suddenly became rich—their rice fields expanded, and luxurious houses were built. But every night, kantil flowers were placed near their safes. Soon, the village head intervened. The tuyul was captured and ordered to be retrieved by its owner within three days. But no one came.

The tuyul was cast into the South Sea.

Did the story end there? Not quite. Because after the tuyul disappeared, the village changed. As if… something still lurked, waiting for a chance to return.

7. The Girl on Gondolayu Bridge

What would you do if someone you gave a ride to on your motorcycle suddenly vanished without a trace?

Officer Aryono experienced it firsthand. A girl in a white uniform asked for a ride on a silent night. She remained eerily still during the trip. But when they reached the bridge, she asked to get off.

When Officer Aryono turned around… no one was there. Only cold air lingered.

Villagers say the bridge is often used for suicides. Could that girl have been a restless spirit, still searching for her way home?

8. The Ritual in the Sugarcane Field – "The 13th Key"

This story was never published—only whispered in a small East Javanese coastal village. Every Jumat Kliwon night (a Javanese mystical Friday), the Suryonegoro family’s sugarcane field echoed with faint gamelan music, though no one was there. Locals called it the "Ghost Stage."

One day, the family’s eldest son, Rama, vanished without a trace. A massive search yielded nothing—until a farmer named Pak Taryo found small footprints leading into the field. The tracks abruptly stopped among the sugarcane, as if… swallowed by the earth.

Three days later, Rama was found standing naked in the field, eyes hollow, clutching a rusty old key. He uttered one sentence before collapsing: "I’ve opened the 13th door…"

The village shaman revealed the field was built atop a colonial-era massacre site. There were 13 sealed spirit gates, and Rama… had opened one.

Since then, nights grew colder. Children’s cries echoed from the empty field. A ritual was held to seal the gate, but the rusty key vanished from its storage.

To this day, no one dares cut the sugarcane in the center of that field.

9. The Bride Doll from the Old Chest

In an inherited family home in North Bandung, a woman named Laras found a dusty wooden chest in the attic. Inside… a bridal doll, complete with a white dress and a tiny crown. She assumed it was her mother’s childhood keepsake.

But after opening the chest, soft gamelan music played in the living room at 2 AM. The doll… moved on its own. It appeared in the bathroom, the kitchen, even sitting politely at the dining table.

The climax came when Laras’s husband woke to find her cradling the doll in the living room, laughing and whispering unintelligibly. The next morning, she remembered nothing.

A spiritualist who examined the doll fainted instantly. Upon waking, he said: "That’s no doll. It’s the preserved body of a woman whose soul was trapped inside… She’s waiting for her wedding day."

Laras now lives alone. Her husband died in a mysterious accident. And the doll… still sits in their bridal room.

10. The Stairway to One’s Own Grave

An architecture student in Yogyakarta documented an abandoned colonial mansion in Kotagede for his thesis. Exploring room by room, he discovered a spiral staircase leading underground.

Curious, he descended with a flashlight. The circular room had walls covered in Dutch scribbles and strange symbols. But the most chilling detail: seven graves dug into the floor.

He photographed the room… then sprinted upstairs as an icy chill seized him.

When he checked the photos, his heart nearly stopped. In one shot, he saw himself… lying in a grave, eyes open, staring at the camera.

He never returned. But two weeks later, his roommate found him sleep-talking: "The stairs will take me home. I must return to my hole."

Days later, he vanished. Only his phone remained. The last photo showed him smiling… from inside the grave.

11. The Voice from the Well

In a remote village near Mount Merapi, an ancient well was believed to be a gateway to the underworld. Those who committed suicide there were never found.

A housewife, Bu Ratmi, often heard a child’s voice calling from the well. She dismissed it as hallucinations—until a white shadow appeared near the well every Friday night.

The horror peaked when her toddler vanished. Small footprints led to the well. Villagers tried draining it, but the water never receded.

Then, a soaked doll surfaced—wearing the exact clothes Bu Ratmi’s child last wore. On its chest was written: "Mom… I’m here."

12. The Message from Hotel Hallway – Room 404

Room 404 in an old Solo hotel was never rented. Receptionists would only say, "Occupied." But a foreign tourist accidentally booked it due to a system error.

On the first night, he frantically called the lobby, claiming knocks came from inside the closet. Staff found it locked and empty. He switched rooms but remained pale with fear.

Days later, he left without checking out. A note remained: "There’s a girl crying in the closet at 3:15 AM. She asked me to find her name… Her name is… (scribbled out)."

The hotel sealed Room 404 forever. But the knocking continues. Online bookings still show it as "available." Those who try to reserve it receive a reply: "Thank you for choosing Room 404. We’ll be waiting."

Closing

These stories aren’t just bedtime tales or urban legends. They’re fragments of real experiences, told by those who lived them. But one question remains: Do you dare prove whether the otherworld truly exists?

Or… will you choose to believe it’s all just coincidence?

Hope You Enjoyed.

Unsolved Mysteries: True Horror Stories from Across Indonesia Part 1

1. The Digital Camera and the Phantom Shadows at Lawang Sewu

The towering colonial building in the heart of Semarang is more than just an ordinary tourist destination. Lawang Sewu holds more than just history—it is said to be home to the unseen. Adi Purwantoro, a resident of Bukit Kencana Jaya, experienced a mystery that still sends shivers down his spine to this day.

While attending an exhibition there, Adi decided to take a photo of himself in front of the main entrance using his digital camera. He took five shots. But only one made his jaw nearly drop—two faint shadowy figures appeared out of nowhere, despite the same background and position, with no one else around.

Curious, Adi showed the printed photo to the building’s caretaker, Mbah Bejo. With a sharp gaze and a trembling voice, Mbah Bejo revealed that the figures were believed to be the spirits of Japanese soldiers who supposedly met a grim end in the building’s basement. Strangely, Adi admitted he didn’t feel fear while there—only an invisible pressure… as if being watched from behind the silent, ancient walls.

Would you dare to take a photo there and see the results?

2. Who Took Zaki Up the Sugar Palm Tree?

In our village, an unwritten rule exists: "Children must be home before the Maghrib call to prayer." But Zaki, my six-year-old nephew, refused to believe in horror stories—until one day, he disappeared.

We panicked. A search began. Torches were lit, pots and pans were banged, and Zaki’s name was called repeatedly. Then… a villager pointed upward. Zaki was there—dirty, pale, and… wearing clothes that weren’t his.

After a spiritual cleansing, Zaki confessed that a beautiful woman had emerged from the trees, hugged him, and offered him food. Luckily, he refused. The village elders said that food was no ordinary treat—it was a trick that, if touched, could render him mute forever.

Who was that woman? Some believe she was Omas, the spirit of a barren woman who saw children as an outlet for her longing.

And since that night… Zaki has never stepped outside when dusk falls.

3. The Dark Inheritance of the Midwife

I come from a family of midwives. The supernatural is no stranger to me. But the incident in Majasto Village when I was ten became a turning point that shook my life.

As I passed the village gate, I saw an old man floating, reaching for my hand. I took it without suspicion. Instantly, the motorcycle I was riding crashed—despite the smooth road. The figure vanished, but the story had only just begun.

At Mbah Buyut’s house, I was told to smoke a corn-husk cigarette. Afterward, my eyes saw a different world—shadows of small children, a woman in red, and the old man reappearing. They didn’t speak… only stared as if judging.

Weeks later, my mother—who had never studied massage—suddenly became a midwife. But then, a mysterious illness struck her. On the night she died, those three figures returned… and they looked at me. Just before her last breath, she whispered, "I’m sorry, my child… I won’t be able to stay with you."

Now, they still search for me. Waiting. Perhaps… they’ve already chosen.

4. The Road Back from the Dark World

As a teenager, I fell into my uncle’s dark world—a world of black magic and pacts with supernatural beings. For a while, I felt invincible. A white stone from Mbah Buyut’s grave allowed me to "see" and "feel" things beyond ordinary human perception.

But everything changed when my father, who had long distanced himself due to differing beliefs, revealed secrets from my past. That I had nearly died at birth. That I was meant to be a child of light, not a successor of darkness.

The decision to throw the white stone into the Bengawan Solo River made the dark world revolt. A fanged woman began haunting me. My own family shunned me.

Yet I stood firm. I chose the path back. Even though shadows of the past still follow… I know light can still prevail.

5. The Black-Cloaked Woman on a Silent Night

Santo just wanted to go home after watching TV at a neighbor’s house. But that night, his path led him past an old, haunted school building.

At first, everything seemed normal. Until an icy chill pierced his bones. In the distance, a black-cloaked woman appeared. Her face was unclear, but Santo froze. The moment he realized she wasn’t human, his body moved on its own—running as if death chased him.

No one believed him until he told the story. And to this day, no villager knows who that woman was. But one thing is certain: that school building is never empty, even when it appears to be.

To be continued...
